Most people who are color blind inherit the trait. The gene for the trait is located on the X Chromosome. If a man inherits the gene for the trait he will have a color vision defect. If a woman inherits a single gene for the trait, she will not, because the normal gene on her other X Chromosome will dominate the defective gene. Women have to inherit the defective trait from both parents to be color blind. Remember, Men are XY Chromosome, Women are XX.
Therefore, men are far more often color blind than women as it only takes one trait to be inherited to make them color blind. There are tests to check for color blind traits. They consists of color dots of two colors of a pattern. The type of color vision problem you have can often be determined by which patterns you can or can’t see in the tests.
